In an era where DIY projects and self-construction are increasingly popular, Gablok has emerged as a game-changer. Established in 2019 by founder Gabriel Lakatos, this company has modernized the construction arena with a fresh approach to building wooden homes. Let’s delve into the story of Gablok and understand how it has transformed the conventional self-construction methods.
Inception of Gablok
Gabriel Lakatos, having a deep-seated passion for interlocking construction games and boasting 25 years of experience in traditional construction, envisioned a new methodology. He imagined an insulated block of wood designed to stack, simplifying the construction process. After extensive research, testing, and validations in stability, acoustics, and energy performance by design offices, the innovative self-construction house system was born.
The Core Concept
At the heart of Gablok’s strategy are insulated blocks, accompanied by a suitable floor system, insulated beams, and lintels. Together, these components facilitate the erection of both exterior and interior elevation walls for wooden homes. The elements are shipped directly to the site, minimizing waste typically associated with on-site processing.
Once the blocks are set up, the next steps include constructing the roof and finalizing the exterior with your preferred finish, be it rendering, brick, or cladding. The interior is also primed for the implementation of various techniques and finishing, thanks to the gaps between rafters.

The Gablok Advantage
The Gablok system champions efficiency. There’s no waiting for materials to dry, and the door and window measurements are ascertained once the building permit is acquired. This pre-emptive approach enables timely ordering of exterior joinery, preventing unnecessary halts during construction. Moreover, the construction flow is continuous, eliminating prolonged waiting periods between different trades.
Crafting with Wooden Blocks
Embracing Gablok’s methodology means harnessing wooden blocks, reminiscent of beloved childhood interlocking games, for constructing homes. From the foundational slab to the installation of the initial set of cellular blocks, Gablok offers guidance every step of the way. With careful adherence to the provided installation plan, you can witness your structural work culminate in under a week.

Do-It-Yourself Kit Construction
With Gablok, there’s no requisite for prior construction expertise. Equipped with a ladder, screwdriver, project plan, and the kit, you can seamlessly assemble your home’s insulated walls. This comprehensive self-build kit comprises all materials essential for structural work, barring the roof and foundation slab. Additionally, technical support remains at your disposal throughout the construction phase.
Innovative Design and Materials
Gablok’s insulated blocks are primarily crafted from OSB (Oriented Strand Board) for the wood portion and EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) for insulation. OSB is a sturdy wood variant derived from wood strips and natural resin, compressed into 18 mm thickness. On the other hand, EPS, an excellent insulator, is created by heating polystyrene beads, expanding them and then compressing them into the desired shape. The amalgamation of OSB and EPS ensures the blocks are not only insulated but also display commendable energy performance.
Practical Application of Gablok
Gablok’s process initiates with the architect-drafted project plans. These are then modified to align with Gablok’s block dimensions. Following a 3D representation, the client gains a vivid understanding of the end result. Merely four weeks post the sketch validation, the Gablok kit is ready for dispatch. It encompasses an assembly blueprint and all vital components for the insulated structure’s erection.

During the inaugural delivery, Gablok’s team offers on-site guidance, ensuring a smooth project commencement. Subsequently, clients are empowered to progress independently, with Gablok’s team available for further support.
Whether it’s a house, workshop, garage, garden shed, or annex, Gablok has made self-construction as intuitive as child’s play.

What is price per square foot to be water tight. This is very interesting.
Will this type of construction meet Florida building codes? I would love to use this system for a two car garage with loft.
Hi, what is the pricing please? Like for a 10h x20x30 structure?
I love the idea; how do you add electrical and plumbing to this home? What is the R rating? Are there isolated roofing rafters, or do you use traditional rafters? What is the depth of the blocks? Are there internal wall blocks as well? If yes, are they narrower to reduce interior space? Is it approved to create additions to traditional stick-built homes?
Where are they manufactured? What is the wall R rating? Does it meet Ontario Canada building codes? Have you sold any in Ontario or Canada?
I need more info on pricing and order info
I would like some information on sizes, energy ratings, whether or not they are acceptable to the International Building, electrical, plumbing and mechanical codes. Also are 2 X 4 studs used inside of just the walls themselves?
